Newton Fire and EMS were able to save a household’s pets during a structure fire they responded to in the 100 Blk of W 26th ST.

Fire and EMS responded shortly after 3 p.m. after smoke could be seen coming out of the home, located north of the North Newton City building.

A guttering crew was working on the building at the time when they noticed smoke and called 911. The homes owners were both at work when firefighters responded.

According to the discussion at the scene a dog and a cat were removed from the home. One cat could be seen receiving oxygen to help treat smoke inhalation injuries. The homeowner showed up and informed firefighters of another cat in the house. The cat was located and removed from the building and appeared in good health.

No flames were visible but smoke continued to issue from the house at 3:40 p.m.

No information was initially available about the cause or extent of damage of the fire.
