Since January 1, 2023, there has been a change in the application of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on some products, but does that mean that they will be more expensive?
Not exactly, so if you saw an image of a Plus X Minus going viral, don't panic. Construction Plywood

In the photo there is a warning for customers, so that they ask at the tills for the final price of the liquors, because they are still carrying out processes to update the new way of billing and that is why the updated price is not on the shelves.
What happened was that as of this year soft drinks, spirits, beers, plywood, spare parts and accessories used for vehicles, iron for roofing and iron rods were included in the 13% Value Added Tax (VAT) in the invoice or electronic ticket.

This change also applies to incandescent lighting products (that is, light bulbs and everything that illuminates), fluorescent lighting products (such as tubes, bulbs, spirals, and the like), in the same way as for refrigerators, washing machines, and used kitchens.

Experts in tax issues, such as Grupo Camacho Internacional, have explained that the change may not mean that all these products will increase in price for the final consumer, that is, you.
They explained that the price change could be seen in the medium and long term because the VAT before January 1 did not appear on the invoices, but it was charged within the manufacturing and distribution chain.
The best thing is that during these first days of the year it is better to ask the final price of liquors and cigarettes in the boxes of the businesses.
Érick Ulate, representative of Consumidores de Costa Rica, a private, non-profit organization that protects the rights of consumers and users of public services, explained that, for example, by informing Más x Menos to its clients of the possible change in the price and that they should ask at the tills, it is enough to avoid complications despite the fact that in the gondola there is a price tag for liquors or cigars.

“It is difficult for someone to file a complaint for speculation before the National Consumer Commission, because the information (from Más x Menos) clarifies that the price must be verified in boxes. It would be very different if the sign did not exist and that they charged a different price for the boxes than the gondola.Obviously, the ideal is for the shelf price and the box price to be the same”, explains Ulate.
